Commitment to Learning | Internal Asset 

Young people need a sense of the lasting importance of learning and a belief in their own abilities.

The Five Commitment to Learning Assets: 

  • Achievement motivation—Young person is motivated to do well in school.

  • Reading for pleasure—Young person reads for pleasure three or more hours per week.

  • Bonding to school—Young person cares about their school.

  • Homework—Young person reports doing at least one hour of homework every school day.

  • School engagement—Young person is actively engaged in learning.

Everyday Asset Building Tips:

  • Ask a young person to teach you a new skill

  • Set daily homework goals

  • Organize a neighborhood book swap

  • Invite a teacher to have dinner at your home

  • Believe that all young people can learn
