Constructive Use of Time | External Asset 

Young people need opportunities—outside of school—to learn and develop new skills and interests with other youth and adults.

The Four Constructive Use of Time Assets: 

  • Creative activities—Young person spends three or more hours per week in lessons or practice in music, theater, or other arts.

  • Time at home—Young person is out with friends “with nothing special to do,” two or fewer nights per week.

  • Religious community—Young person spends one or more hours per week in activities in a religious institution.

  • Youth programs—Young person spends three or more hours per week in sports, clubs, or organizations at school and/or in community organizations.

Everyday Asset Building Tips:

  • Visit museums and libraries and attend plays and concerts with youth

  • Encourage teens to be involved in at least one hobby

  • Have a regular family night to do something fun together

  • Involve youth in decisions about family spiritual activities

  • Vounteer in programs and activities for young children
