Positive Identity | Internal Asset

Young people need to believe in their own self-worth and to feel that they have control over the things that happen to them.

The Four Positive Identity Assets:

  • Personal power—Young person feels they have control over “things that happen to me.”

  • Self-esteem—Young person reports having a high self-esteem.

  • Sense of purpose—Young person reports that “my life has a purpose.”

  • Positive view of personal future—Young person is optimistic about their personal future.

Everyday Asset Building Tips:

  • Dwell on what children do right instead of what they do wrong

  • Avoid comparing young people with each other

  • Let youth know you are proud of their talents, capabilities, and discoveries

  • Listen when young people talk about their sense of purpose in life

  • Ask young people what they are passionate about
