Youth Worker Cafe: Implicit Bias

IYI.jpg

Implicit Bias: Understanding, Recognizing, Overcoming

Implicit bias predicts and determines our decisions and actions; it determines how we positively or negatively respond to the youth we serve. It is important to recognize that we all have biases - this is how we process and organize information and make sense of the work around us.

This session is designed to help you recognize biases and identify ways to actively work to minimize and eliminate decision making that contributes to disparities based on race, ethnicity, gender, and geography in youth-serving systems.

Join us for this experience and learn as we

  • define implicit bias;

  • recognize the role that implicit bias can play in decision making, and

  • understand how implicit bias can impact youth-serving systems and organizations.

Speaker: Charles Edwards Assistant Principal – Columbus East High School

Since 2005, Charles has co-chaired BCSC's district-wide diversity council which has tackled difficult topics related to diversity such as privilege, the burden of representation, and disproportionality. Currently, he's providing

Getting Relationships Right

A workshop for leaders who want to create schools and programs where all young people experience developmental relationships to help them be and become their best selves.

Research being conducted at Search Institute is demonstrating that when young people experience relationships with adults that are characterized by five essential elements, their outcomes are significantly better in a wide range of areas – from mastering social and emotional skills to succeeding in school – and risk behaviors such as drinking, smoking, and fighting are significantly lower.

Getting Relationships Right will put you on the path to creating a relationship-rich environment that will enable all young people to thrive.

Who should attend?

Teams of two or more people from schools, youth programs, and other organizations that serve young people should attend. While teams can be comprised of people who play many different roles, at least one member of the team should be a leader who has responsibility for the professional development of staff or other important aspects of organizational improvement.

The workshop prepares participants to return to their schools and programs to lead professional development sessions and organizational improvement efforts that help staff build developmental relationships with all of the young people that the organization serves. To help them achieve that objective, leaders leave the workshop with:

Instructions: Detailed instructions for professional development sessions that help staff strengthen relationships.

PowerPoint: PowerPoint presentations that facilitators can use to guide staff through professional development and organizational improvement sessions. The PowerPoint presentations all feature detailed notes that help facilitators inform and engage participants in the content of the module.

Workbook: The Leader's Guide to Getting Relationships Right, which provides comprehensive instructions for facilitating professional development and organizational improvement sessions focused on helping staff build more developmental relationships with the young people they serve.

Activities: The Developmental Relationships Youth Activities Book, which includes thirty structured activities for building developmental relationships with and among young people.

Facilitators: Carrie Foster

Price:
$725 each for groups of three or more (usable at all times)
$745 individual early bird price - through Feb 7
$795 individual price -Feb 8-Feb 21

IYI Youth Worker Café - The Raising of America: Early Childhood and the Future of Our Nation

DATE: Wednesday, May 1, 2019

TIME: 11:00am-1:30pm

LOCATION: YES Cinema (328 Jackson St., Columbus, IN 47201) (phone 812-378-4937)

OVERVIEW

The Raising of America Series is a five-part documentary that explores the questions: Why are so many children in America faring so poorly? What are the consequences for the nation’s future? How might we, as a nation, do better? In this film these questions are investigated through different lenses:

1. What does science tell us about the enduring importance of early life experiences on the brain and body?

2. What it is like to be a parent today?

3. What policies and structures help or hinder the raising of healthy, happy and compassionate children?

Join us for the viewing of the first installment in the documentary series which covers all three of these issues. We will then have a solutions-based panel discussion about how to reframe the way we look at early child health and development and how the community can make a difference. For more information about this film visit www.raisingofamerica.org.
