• In December 2020, Bartholomew County joined an international research team led by the International School Psychology Association (ISPA), the International Institute for Child Rights and Development (IICRD), Search Institute, IUPUI School of Education and the Indiana Department of Education to advance current work in the area of positive youth development and child well-being.

Building on years of strong school-community partnerships, local leaders surveyed Bartholomew County public school students in 4th through 12th grade in the fall of 2022. Students had the opportunity to anonymously share feedback on their current well-being. Survey results continue to be studied to shed light on the critical question:

Do developmental relationships, and developmental assets buffer young people from the harmful effects of adverse childhood experiences, thus increasing the chances of better short-and long-term outcomes?

  • Bartholomew County values youth voice. To help our young people and their families, we must provide opportunities like the Resilience Through Strengths survey to identify where our community can meet needs. In September 2022, 6,206 4th-12th grade students from Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation and Flat Rock Hawcreek School Corporation completed the survey. Questions fell under the following areas: Developmental Assets, Developmental Relationships, Developmental Outcomes, Academic Motivation, Experiences of Bias and Belonging, and Effects of COVID-19. Questions regarding Adverse Childhood Experiences were only available for students 18 or older to complete voluntarily. Questions about orientation were limited to high school students only. As with previous Search Institute voluntary surveys, student input remains anonymous. Parent letters were sent out before administration dates to provide the option to decline the opportunity. Students also had the option to skip any questions during the survey or choose to decline the opportunity throughout the experience.

Community presentation and slides

On March 2, 2023, Council for Youth Development and Search Institute presented the Resilience Through Strengths survey results to the Bartholomew County Community. Through this survey, we gained valuable information about the well-being of our young people.

Below you will find the slides to reference while following along with the video presentation to the left.

Due to time limitations, we were unable to answer all questions from those who attended the live community presentation. In the coming days, we will create an FAQ page to answer the remaining questions and those submitted before March 19.
